Music or Machine…

You think computers, you think internet, Facebook, work device, electronics, you think computer you think machine. But you don’t think musical instrument.

You think software, you think confusing, runs programs, requirement, you think software you think device. But you don’t think musical instrument.

So why then, are computers and software such a big part in the music world? Because I am positive the definition of computer has nothing to do with music. We use computer to make music sound the way we want. Well, why can’t real instruments do that anymore? Why doesn’t the enchanting sound of a piano cut it anymore?

We are known as the technology generation. With our phones, computers, Ipads. We use them for everying, socializing, work, learning and recreation. But do we really need to involve our obsession with technology in the music we listen to? Do we need to? ‘Course not, but then again we don’t need technology in the first place.

So does using computers and software’s to make your music sound a certain way make you a real artist? Well that all depends on your views. Does learning how to use a computer skill? Yes. Does writing the software for making music on a computer take skill? Yes. But it also takes skill and time to learn how to play an instrument, to increase you vocal range, and to be able to write music. It takes a skill that most people don’t have. Yet to most using a computer is just common knowledge, instruments don’t come with a “how-to-book”, they take practice, long, frustrating practice. Software comes with step-by-step instructions.

Oh, and then there is auto-tune. A way to make you sound they way you want with the touch of a few keys, so what happened to all that practice you just spent trying to increase your vocal range? Well that didn’t happen, because you took the easy way out, you took technologies way out. But does using auto-tune make you fake? Or just creative? Well does being able to read step-by-step instructions make you creative, or just like everyone else?

You think music, you think instruments, singing, skill, when you think you music you think about how much you think art. You don’t think computers and software.

With software and instruction well, almost anyone can be an artist now a days, all it takes is a good set of step-by-step instructions, or maybe there’s a side of computers and software we don’t see.

But still, why is an auto-tuned mess created my a machine being passed as music?
