A happy song lifts your spirits up while a sad composition can drag them down. These only show that music has the seemingly “magical” ability to influence our minds in the most subtle ways. As science probes deeper into music’s effects on the brain, researchers discover peculiar things.

Music can help you become a better communicator because it gives you an idea on the emotions of other people. According to several studies, individuals who can play musical instruments at near-professional levels can track subtle changes in emotions and intonations in the vocal tones.

It can alter your time perception that is why various agencies employ music to keep you calm while waiting on the other line of the phone. The brain is distracted by music, hence, you are less likely to notice your surroundings in detail including the time.

There are certain sounds that human beings associate with different emotions such as fear, joy, sadness and many more.

Music surprisingly makes you stronger by making your physical performance better. This is because of distraction that you get from listening to a song, taking your attention away from your aching arms or legs. When your body is synchronized with steady musical tempo, you also spend less effort and time on the task you are doing.

It can change drinking habits. Studies show that different types of music caused drinkers to alter the description of the drinks they consumed.

If you have an audio direct system or any kinds of audio device at home, try to listen to something and see how it affects you. For sure, you will be surprised by what you’ll discover.

Ever since Scottish-born singer-songwriter Kate Victoria “KT” Tunstall performed her catchy little tune “Black Horse and the Cherry Tree” on the British music television show Later . . . with Jools Holland in 2004, fans have been anxiously waiting to hear what the bluesy singer will produce next, and with aspiring guitarists anxious to know what acoustic guitar the musical phenom uses to produce her rich, “retro-hillbilly” sound.

In an interview published in Acoustic Guitar inMay of 2008, the Grammy-nominated performer gave readers and fans the inside scoop on upcoming projects as well as what instruments she favors.

For acoustic guitars, KT prefers Gibson Doves. On her acclaimed 2006 CD DVD combo, KT Tunstall’s Acoustic Extravaganza, she used a blonde Dove (the one she was seen playing at the Glastonbury Festival of Contemporary Performing Arts in 2005), and also has a black custom “Elvis Presley” model with stars on the fretboard and a white pickguard (that she used to perform at the Showbox SoDo in Seattle, Washington in November of 2010). When not playing a Dove, her favorite backup acoustic is another classic-among-classics, a Gibson guitar, Hummingbird.

As KT explained, she also plays a hand-crafted, one-of-a-kind acoustic guitar gifted to her by Shinichi Arimitsu, a skilled Japanese guitar crafter who’s become an avid fan of her music. To commemorate her first big hit from Eye to the Telescope, this signature guitar was thoughtfully designed with a black horse and a cherry blossom.

For electric guitars, KT favors Gretsches, owning a 1962 G6128 (Duo-Jet) semi-hollow body Double Cutaway, a 1963 Silver Jet, and a beautiful white 1975 Falcon. She has also been seen performing with a red wine-colored Gibson Chet Atkin’s Country Gentleman and a candy-apple red standard Fender Strat (which she has discovered actually has a Jazzmaster neck).

Today, this kind of event is now being used not only when organizing clubbing events but in other types of parties as well, like corporate parties and even in modern wedding celebrations.

Though the concept of people dancing in headphones came into being just recently, the idea has already been around since the 90s. Perhaps, one of the first visual occasions where people were seen wearing headsets was in a party held in 1969 at a Finnish Science Fiction Film, where a movie entitled Ruusujen Aika, “Time of Roses”, was being shown. Eco-activists also used this unique concept when holding outdoor parties to significantly reduce noise pollution and avoid unnecessary wildlife disturbance.

In 2005, Glastonbury Festival also held a silent headphone disco event. This was a large scale gathering attended by thousands of people wearing their headsets. Because of the noise restrictions in the area, organizers decided to adapt the concept to prevent excessive disturbance while participants get to enjoy the festival.

Over the recent years, silent headset disco events have become increasingly popular. In fact, many companies are now organizing events and parties where the use of headphones is considered as the highlight. Some even sell home kits perfect for those who are thinking of throwing exciting headphone parties at the comforts of their own home.

In the era of digital music distribution, is it easier for an aspiring young artists to sell their music? Have things changed for the better or did the uncontrollable file sharing made it even more difficult to reach wider audience and get paid well at the same time?

The distribution channels have certainly changed and while some old-timers are fighting these changes head-on, the younger bands and musicians are embracing them and making them work in their advantage. Back in the days, if you wanted your LP or CD to sell well, you needed to hire a distributor, who took a significant cut from the sales, but made sure that your music is distributed to a great number of record stores. However, this was a model, which worked well for popular and established bands and musicians since each one of their new releases was in high demand. The possibilities for a new artist to reach large audience were almost non-existent, but all this changed with the increasing popularity of the Internet.

Now, you can use digital music distribution methods to have your music heard and your videos seen by millions of fans worldwide. You can utilize the immense powers of the large video sharing websites such as YouTube to release a new song, or have your whole album sold in some of the numerous online music stores such as iTunes, Amazon MP3, and eMusic. By working with prominent distributors like CD Baby, you could reach for the skies, sell millions of copies, and pay considerably lower fees than if you opt in for the traditional distribution channels. You could also sell your work independently and set up your own mini music store, from where your fans could download the songs after paying a small fee for each download. With the ability to reach millions of fans in hundreds of countries, the Internet is a powerful tool that all musicians should use, and combining the mainstream and the digital music distribution channels is an approach, which could help a struggling independent artist get his or her music heard.

Each year, the Princeton Review, who also ranks schools academically, publishes a list of the top ten party schools in the country. The list is based on a combination of survey questions concerning the use of alcohol and drugs, hours of study each day, and the popularity of the Greek system, according to the Princeton Review. Playboy Magazine also publishes a party schools list annually and there are some other lists that come up sporadically.
There are several schools on this year’s list that are regulars, and show up pretty much every year on the Princeton list, as well as on other lists that are published. These inlcude:
West Virginia
Texas at Austin
Florida
Florida State
Ohio University
Here is 2010’s list of top party schools, according to the Princeton Review
1. Georgia – UGA is known for football and great music in the streets. After all, both the B-52’s and REM are from here. There are too many wild frat parties in Athens to name.
2. Ohio University – This one is a regular on all the lists, mostly for its insane Halloween party. People come from all over to party here on Halloween.
3. Penn State – Penn State topped the list in 2009.
4. West Virginia – WVU is on every party list pretty much every year. They like to set couches on fire here.
5. Mississippi – Mississippi has one of the largest Greek scenes of any college. That’s what makes it such a big party school. Well, and football.
6. Texas at Austin – One of the all time great party schools. They have a very large enrollment, (around 60,000) which helps with the party situation.
7. Florida – Florida has an enrollment of over 50,000, making it one of the largest universities in the country. That and their obsession with football leads to some pretty serious partying. Their stadium is called the “swamp”.
8. California –Santa Barbara – The only college in the country with its own beach. Need I say more?
9. Iowa – The college is located right in Iowa City, which has an incredible bar scene that the students take full advantage of.
10. DePauw University – Not a regular on the list. It is one of the smallest schools on the list, with an enrollment of just 15,000 and also the only private school on the list.
Some other regulars, who didn’t make the top ten include:
Florida State – a regular who fell to number 11 this year.
Wisconsin – Madison – Another hard partying school. It’s got a great location (right on the lake) a big party every Thursday night and a central street with lots of bars. It has made the top ten several times, but is number 12 this year.
Alabama – Another semi-regular and another football obsessed town. (Think Bear Bryant) This year the Crimson Tide ranked at number 13.
We’re not sure this is the list you should look at when you’re picking your place of higher learning, but it is a good idea to know what to expect!

Phyllis Z. blogs on ways to find schools with the highest online university rankings 2011.

Anyway, what’s kind of cool now, is to see the older one still sit down at the piano and play just for the fun of it. It did seem a waste to let all the talent go to waste, and it’s cool when kids take it upon themselves to use one of those hard learned and expensive skills. Last summer she found some free sheet music online, and started teaching herself some of the popular pop music she’s into these days. The first piece she learned was “Hey Delila”, and then she learned one of the songs from the Twilight Movies. It was my favorite piece actually. She even learned one of my favorites, as she was looking for suggestions. That 500 miles song by Venessa Carlton was one I suggested.
Anchor “Free Sheet Music”
