What Kind of Guitar Does KT Tunstall Play?

Ever since Scottish-born singer-songwriter Kate Victoria “KT” Tunstall performed her catchy little tune “Black Horse and the Cherry Tree” on the British music television show Later . . . with Jools Holland in 2004, fans have been anxiously waiting to hear what the bluesy singer will produce next, and with aspiring guitarists anxious to know what acoustic guitar the musical phenom uses to produce her rich, “retro-hillbilly” sound.

In an interview published in Acoustic Guitar inMay of 2008, the Grammy-nominated performer gave readers and fans the inside scoop on upcoming projects as well as what instruments she favors.

For acoustic guitars, KT prefers Gibson Doves. On her acclaimed 2006 CD DVD combo, KT Tunstall’s Acoustic Extravaganza, she used a blonde Dove (the one she was seen playing at the Glastonbury Festival of Contemporary Performing Arts in 2005), and also has a black custom “Elvis Presley” model with stars on the fretboard and a white pickguard (that she used to perform at the Showbox SoDo in Seattle, Washington in November of 2010). When not playing a Dove, her favorite backup acoustic is another classic-among-classics, a Gibson guitar, Hummingbird.

As KT explained, she also plays a hand-crafted, one-of-a-kind acoustic guitar gifted to her by Shinichi Arimitsu, a skilled Japanese guitar crafter who’s become an avid fan of her music. To commemorate her first big hit from Eye to the Telescope, this signature guitar was thoughtfully designed with a black horse and a cherry blossom.

For electric guitars, KT favors Gretsches, owning a 1962 G6128 (Duo-Jet) semi-hollow body Double Cutaway, a 1963 Silver Jet, and a beautiful white 1975 Falcon. She has also been seen performing with a red wine-colored Gibson Chet Atkin’s Country Gentleman and a candy-apple red standard Fender Strat (which she has discovered actually has a Jazzmaster neck).

Silent Disco: Dancing To Your Heart’s Content in Headphones

Also referred as headphone parties, silent parties, headphone disco, and a lot of other various names, silent disco has become a unique phenomenon in the clubbing circuit. Today, this kind of event is now being used not only when organizing clubbing events but in other types of parties as well, like corporate parties and even in modern wedding celebrations.

Though the concept of people dancing in headphones came into being just recently, the idea has already been around since the 90s. Perhaps, one of the first visual occasions where people were seen wearing headsets was in a party held in 1969 at a Finnish Science Fiction Film, where a movie entitled Ruusujen Aika, “Time of Roses”, was being shown. Eco-activists also used this unique concept when holding outdoor parties to significantly reduce noise pollution and avoid unnecessary wildlife disturbance.

In 2005, Glastonbury Festival also held a silent headphone disco event. This was a large scale gathering attended by thousands of people wearing their headsets. Because of the noise restrictions in the area, organizers decided to adapt the concept to prevent excessive disturbance while participants get to enjoy the festival.

Over the recent years, silent headset disco events have become increasingly popular. In fact, many companies are now organizing events and parties where the use of headphones is considered as the highlight. Some even sell home kits perfect for those who are thinking of throwing exciting headphone parties at the comforts of their own home.

Digital Music Distribution In 21St Century

In the era of digital music distribution, is it easier for an aspiring young artists to sell their music? Have things changed for the better or did the uncontrollable file sharing made it even more difficult to reach wider audience and get paid well at the same time?

The distribution channels have certainly changed and while some old-timers are fighting these changes head-on, the younger bands and musicians are embracing them and making them work in their advantage. Back in the days, if you wanted your LP or CD to sell well, you needed to hire a distributor, who took a significant cut from the sales, but made sure that your music is distributed to a great number of record stores. However, this was a model, which worked well for popular and established bands and musicians since each one of their new releases was in high demand. The possibilities for a new artist to reach large audience were almost non-existent, but all this changed with the increasing popularity of the Internet.

Now, you can use digital music distribution methods to have your music heard and your videos seen by millions of fans worldwide. You can utilize the immense powers of the large video sharing websites such as YouTube to release a new song, or have your whole album sold in some of the numerous online music stores such as iTunes, Amazon MP3, and eMusic. By working with prominent distributors like CD Baby, you could reach for the skies, sell millions of copies, and pay considerably lower fees than if you opt in for the traditional distribution channels. You could also sell your work independently and set up your own mini music store, from where your fans could download the songs after paying a small fee for each download. With the ability to reach millions of fans in hundreds of countries, the Internet is a powerful tool that all musicians should use, and combining the mainstream and the digital music distribution channels is an approach, which could help a struggling independent artist get his or her music heard.

It’s Funny How Technology Helps Musical Kids

I’m one of those lucky fellas that’s at the age where he gets to live with three teenager daughters.  Yep, that’s right 3 of them, and they all take or have taken piano lessons at one time or another.  We let the oldest stop once she reached high school, since we figured she’d have her hands full with all the school work.  It turned out to be a pretty good decision, as she now has a job and sport commitments that there was no way she could have fit in with piano lessons as well.  Her two younger sisters still take lessons, and for some reason it seems to be more of an exercise to get them to stick with it.  Must be something about an older child just doing what she’s told.
